Experiential Playground for a Tribal School in the United States

Spring playgrounds developed an experiential playground for Menominee Tribal School in Neopit, Wisconsin, together with the distributor N.E.W Playscapes.

The playground was created for a school setting for grades 1-8 and combines climbing experiences, slides, a rope bridge, and musical instruments for outdoor public play.

The completed space offers children an active and varied environment, combining movement, social interaction, imaginative play, and visual details connected to the identity of the school.

About the Project and the Process

The project was planned as a complete play environment for a tribal school in the United States. The design brings together a large central structure, different climbing options, a high rope bridge, open and enclosed slides, and musical elements for outdoor use.

During planning and installation, the emphasis was on building a playground that supports several forms of play within one shared space. Children can climb, slide, balance, move together, explore imaginative play, and interact with musical elements.

The project also includes graphic panels and visual details that give the playground a local character and connect it to Menominee Tribal School and the wider Menominee community.

This playground stands out through the way it combines challenge, storytelling, and school identity. The tall central structure creates a strong visual presence, while the rope bridge and climbing elements add movement, height, and progression through the space.

The musical play elements add another layer to the experience, supporting calmer and more social interaction alongside the more active climbing and sliding areas. The local visual language and symbols help make the playground feel connected to its specific educational and community context.

Client Requirements

The playground was designed to include several activity zones within one connected area:

• A high central play structure

• A rope bridge linking parts of the structure

• A climbing pyramid with nets and climbing walls

• A local visual language connected to the school and community

Design Phase

In the design phase, we focused on creating a clear relationship between the different play systems. The central structure was planned as the main vertical element, incorporating a tower, bridge connection, slides, and graphic details.

Climbing areas and musical play elements were placed around it to create a full playground experience with several types of activity available in the same space.

Design Concept

The playground design uses a natural and educational palette, with beige, brown, orange, and green tones. The main tower has a narrative quality, expressed through a pitched roof, illustrated window details, and local symbols. The elevated rope bridge, climbing nets, and climbing pyramid introduce an adventurous character, while the musical instruments create a quieter, more social and sensory layer.

We created the playground as a place where children can move between heights, stations, and activities - climbing, playing music, exploring, and interacting together. The combination of physical play systems with cultural and visual elements turns the playground into a meaningful school environment rather than a generic play area.
