Innovative Playground Planning and Installation for a New Urban Community Summary

Spring playgrounds delivered a large design-build playground project for a new urban community, as part of a wider programme of innovative public play spaces.

The playground was developed as a rich and imaginative environment, combining nature references, bird-inspired forms, climbing activity, accessible play and integrated lighting.

The project brings together three main play areas: a central multi-level play zone, a large adventure net zone and an artistic robinia structure with a sculptural bird concept. Together, these areas form a distinctive public playground that is active, inclusive, visually strong and suitable for growing residential districts.

Innovative Playground Planning and Installation for a New Urban Community Summary

About the Project and the Process

The aim of the project was to create a landmark play space for a newly developing community. Rather than focusing on a single structure, the playground was designed as a complete destination with several different play experiences that work together.

The design language is rooted in nature, movement and imagination. The central play area features a high, green structure with climbing routes, bridges, slides and transparent elements that create a sense of openness and discovery.

The adventure area introduces a broad ropes-based structure for movement, balance and physical challenge. The artistic robinia area brings a warmer, more sculptural quality, using timber, climbing elements and playful nest-related details.

The full playground layout was planned to allow many children and families to use the space at the same time.

Each zone has its own purpose, while the overall composition remains open and easy to navigate. The project includes multi-age play, accessible rotating play, swings for different age groups, a basket swing, spring play elements, climbing nets, slides, balancing activities and imaginative robinia play.

A key feature of the project is the lighting integrated into the play equipment. Lighting is incorporated into the main structure, the slides, the upper tower area and the swing zone. This is a proprietary lighting concept developed by Spring playgrounds, initiated and proposed by the brand as part of the wider design vision.

It adds atmosphere after dark, strengthens the visual identity of the playground and turns the structures into a more vivid and engaging experience.

Highlights of the Project

The uniqueness of the project lies in the way it combines public-scale planning with a playful story. The playground is large, active and full of movement, yet it remains coherent and welcoming. It offers a wide range of physical and social play opportunities, from climbing and sliding to swinging, balancing, rotating and exploring.

The robinia element adds a crafted, artistic presence, while the large net structure brings energy and challenge. The central play zone anchors the entire space with height, color and visibility. The result is a playground that feels joyful, dynamic, magical and impressive, while still meeting the practical needs of a busy public environment.

The playground was required to serve a new residential area and function as a central public play destination. The client needed an innovative, durable and visually memorable space, suitable for different ages, high visitor numbers and inclusive use.

The design brief focused on originality, accessibility, connection to the surrounding environment, diverse play value, quality materials, safety and long-term suitability for intensive public use.

The design phase focused on creating three complementary zones. The central zone was planned as a multi-level play experience with climbing, bridges, slides and discovery routes. Around it, additional accessible and social play elements were placed to support shared use by children of different ages and abilities.

The adventure zone was developed as a large ropes and net play environment. It includes climbing nets, transition paths, HDPE stepping surfaces, rubber elements and activities that encourage balance, coordination, courage and movement.

The robinia zone was designed as an artistic timber play structure with a bird-inspired form. It combines climbing walls, cable nets, interior play areas, an open slide, a rope hammock and egg-shaped elements that support imaginative play and strengthen the nature-based concept.

The design concept is based on a natural play world of trees, birds, nests and movement. Green tones, leaf-like graphics, high vertical forms, climbing nets and sculptural timber details create a unified and recognizable playground identity. The space feels imaginative and free, while every element is carefully planned for use in a public setting.

The robinia structure brings warmth and storytelling into the project. Natural timber, earthy colors and crafted details allow children to climb, enter, move through, balance and explore. The egg-shaped elements add another playful layer, making the area feel like part of a larger story.

Lighting plays an important role in the overall concept. It highlights the structures, the upper parts of the main play element, the slides and the swings, creating a stronger visual effect in the evening. The result is a public playground with presence, atmosphere and a memorable sense of wonder.
