Musical Playground Design for Public Spaces - An Accessible, All-Ages Community Sound Garden

Summary

Spring playgrounds delivered an accessible, large-scale musical playground for a public setting. The municipality later expanded and upgraded the installation, shaping a lively space where visitors can experiment freely with sound and rhythm. The playground includes a harp-inspired entrance feature, an interactive music wall, tuned instruments, and special on-site guidance that makes it possible to play by following colours, even without musical literacy.

Musical Playground Design for Public Spaces - An Accessible, All-Ages Community Sound Garden

About the Project and the Process

The project was conceived as an inclusive musical environment for broad community participation - across ages and abilities.

The design intent was to link several music stations into one coherent experience that encourages creativity and shared play.

The local authority later chose to extend and enhance the site, increasing the range of instruments and strengthening the overall user experience.

Highlights of the Project

  • A distinctive harp-shaped entrance element that marks the space and signals its musical identity
  • An interactive music wall where tapping the components produces a familiar, real song
  • Tuned instruments alongside percussion options to support different play styles
  • Guidance signage that enables colour-based play for intuitive engagement
  • A colourful surface language that supports orientation and connects the stations
  • A large musical playground designed for all ages
  • Full accessibility throughout the space
  • A broad collection of instruments tuned to musical notes

The layout was planned as an experience path, with clear transitions between stations to support natural circulation. The surface and station placement were designed to maintain an accessible, continuous route and to allow parallel use by multiple groups. The design also supports two modes of engagement: free musical exploration and guided play based on the on-site guidance signage.

The concept blends musical content with a bright, readable environment. Colour lines on the ground help structure movement and define zones, while the long music wall introduces rhythm and visual continuity. The instrument set was selected to offer both precise, tuned sounds and open-ended percussion play, encouraging repeat visits and new combinations of play.
