Bespoke Jewish Community Playground in Portland

A bespoke Jewish community playground was created in Portland, Oregon for Congregation Kesser Israel, together with Wildwood Playgrounds as distributor and project partner.

The brief called for a play environment with a clear Jewish character, meaningful visual content, and a layout that would serve children of different ages.

The completed space features a main play unit inspired by the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City, printed educational graphics, a Noah’s Ark themed element, an accessible carousel, and a variety of active play zones.

About the Project and the Process

This project was developed around a highly specific community vision. The client wanted a playground that would express Jewish identity through play, not only through decoration.

For Spring playgrounds, the challenge was to turn that idea into a complete play environment with movement, storytelling, and visual continuity.

The central structure was designed with arches, gates, windows, bridges, rope elements, and slides, creating a playful interpretation of ancient city walls.

Additional panels introduce children to the Seven Days of Creation, the Seven Species, an ancient map of the Land of Israel, and animals from the Torah.

These elements allow the playground to function both as an active play space and as a gentle visual story connected to the community’s world.

Highlights of the Project

The main strength of the project is its bespoke approach. Every major element was planned around the client’s dream: the architectural language, the printed content, the themed play units, and the way children move through the site.

The result is a playground that feels specific to the community rather than generic.

The client asked for a Jewish themed playground suitable for the community and for children of all ages.

Key requirements included a prominent main structure inspired by the walls of Jerusalem, integrated Jewish content, varied play opportunities, and an accessible carousel within the overall play area.

The design phase focused on creating a clear flow between physical activity and storytelling. Children can climb, cross, slide, explore, and interact with illustrated panels as part of one continuous experience.

The accessible carousel adds a more inclusive and open play option, while the ropes, bridges, and slides provide movement and challenge.

Together, these areas support shared play, imagination, and independent exploration for different ages.

The visual concept connects Jewish heritage with a bright and welcoming playground atmosphere. The wall-inspired play structures use soft, stone-like colours and simple architectural lines, while the Noah’s Ark element and animal graphics bring warmth, colour, and narrative detail.

For Spring playgrounds, this project demonstrates how a community’s story can become the foundation for a complete play environment - a playground designed around identity, belonging, and the client’s original vision.
